Devils Tower National Monument is America’s first national monument established by Theodore Roosevelt under the antiquities act. The tower is a large geologic feature that resembles the trunk of a tree rising 867 ft from the ground. Devils Tower is located in northeast Wyoming near the Black Hills along Highway 24. You can get to Devils Tower by taking Highway 14 off of Interstate 90.
We visited Devils Tower National Monument as part of your 2018 trip to Glacier National Park. We approached the monument from the west side on Hwy 14. In bends in the road, from either direction, you get short glimpses of Devils Tower. As you get closer you begin to realize what an otherworldly formation Devils Tower is. The tower is featured in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Eventually you arrive at The Highway 24 junction and head north. By this point Devils Tower is in constant view. You then arrive at the small town of Devils Tower that has a post office, trading post and KOA Campground. You are then at the fee booth for the monument. $25 for an individual, good for seven days. Free if you have the America the Beautiful Pass.
View of Devils Tower from Tower Trail
On the right you pass a prairie dog town, there is a turnout to look at the prairie dogs. The first left takes you to a campground as well as a sculpture that frames the monument for pictures. Following the main road to its end there is parking for the trails and visitor center. The visitor center is a great place to get information about the trails as well as interesting information about Devils Tower. The most popular trail, and the one we went on, is the Tower Trail. This is a 1.3 mile loop surrounding the base of Devils Tower. This trail can be very popular so you might want to consider some of the other less traveled trails that provide excellent views of the tower. Go to the visitor center or website for more information.
If you are in the area of the Black Hills you should consider going to Devils Tower. It is a place you will not soon forget.
