Of the many attractions at Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone may be the most beautiful. The Grand Canyon is located on the eastern side of the park loop road between Yellowstone Lake and the Tower Junction. Next to the canyon, is the Canyon Village with a park lodge, visitor center, park store and gas station.
The canyon begins with the 109-foot upper falls of the Yellowstone River. The river continues further shortly and then over the 309 foot lower falls into towering yellow canyon walls a thousand feet tall. There are many trails and lookouts from either rim to see this wonder of nature up close.
Artist's Point Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
The most popular view of the canyon is that of Artists Point in the picture to the right. This is the farthest point along the south rim drive. From here, one can gaze at the vastness of the canyon and view the far lower falls cascading the river down to the floor of the yellow rock canyon. This is a view that is hard to forget. The problem with this view is that it is very popular, for a more secluded experience put on your hiking shoes and head for the South Rim Trail. This trail will take you all the way back to the lower fall and the main park road. At the parking lot closer to the park road is the parking lot with the trailhead to Uncle Tom’s Trail. This trail is 328 steps metal steps down from the rim to the Lower Falls on the southside. This is a more strenuous exercise than the more tame South Rim Trail.
Drive to the north side of the canyon for more spectacular views and get even closer to the canyon’s waterfalls. Take the North Rim Drive and pull over at the first parking lot. From here, you can access the brinks trail. It begins by moving down slowly when it reaches a junction. Turning off this trail leads to the Brink of the Upper Falls after passing the Brinks Parking Lot. At the end of the trail, you can stand at the top of the Upper Falls. Back on the main trail you descend down 600 feet to the brink of the Lower Falls. This is a spectacular view that you can view the waterfall as well as the canyon beyond.
Further down the North Rim Drive is the Lookout Point Trail parking lot. This trail is another way to get down into the canyon and is less scary than the Uncle Tom trail. The Red Rock Point is a great view of the Lower Falls down in the canyon that fewer people visit. The final view is the Grand View, the main focus is the canyon and not the waterfall, as they are not visible from this view.
